Última Contribution of climate variability to occurrences of anoxic crises 'malaigues' in the Thau lagoon (southern France) ArchiMer Harzallah, Ali; Chapelle, Annie. The Thau lagoon, located in southern France, suffers episodically in summer from anoxic crises known as 'malaigues'. Such crises mostly occur under warm conditions and low winds. In this paper we investigated effects of local weather conditions (air temperature, wind speed and precipitation over southern France), and two climate oscillations (the North Atlantic Oscillation and the El Ni (n) over tildeo Oscillation) on malaigue occurrences based on 33-year data series and dates when malaigues appeared. The study shows that the probability of occurrence of malaigues increases with increasing temperature and decreasing winds in August both mostly associated to the high phase of an index of North Atlantic Oscillation. La crise anoxique ou «malaïgue» qui a sévi dans le bassin de Thau durant l'été 1997 a détruit presque le tiers de la production annuelle d'huîtres. Son déclenchement a suivi une période durant laquelle les vents étaient exceptionnellement faibles. Après un rappel scientifique des processus mis en jeu, la crise anoxique est décrite au travers des observations de mortalités et des concentrations en oxygène dissous. Les eaux anoxiques se sont développées dans les zones conchylicoles vers l'Est et l'Ouest à partir d'un foyer situé à proximité du principal port conchylicole (Mourre-Blanc à Mèze). The Thau Lagoon, from time to time is the area of crisis locally called « malaïgues ». The characteristics of these « malaïgues » are the lack of oxygen interesting all the water column and the white color of the waters during the phenomena. The result of this anoxy is the death of cultivated molluscs. From 1969 to 2000 nine « malaïgues » have been observed. They occur during the Summer period but in different locations. The surface of the areas concerned are very different according the year. Different means of struggle have been tried and are described.
